Hotspur finished outgrowing her crib this evening by climbing out of it. I don't have a substitute yet, so she's asleep on a cushion that used to live in a papa-san chair, snuggled up to a Nerf sword. There are no monsters under her bed, because there is no under under her bed, and also, she slew them.

Danger Lad! read things - just a word or two here and there, but reading! Independent sounding out of words happened! More will probably follow! Batman comics for the win! I was so pleased, and then he was so pleased with himself.

Beds are overrated. A mattress on the floor is a fine place for a toddler or preschooler or, you know, a second grader to sleep. (Kiera has a mattress on a box spring, but she still doesn't have a frame.)

I'm delighted for both of them! (A little startled on Hotspur's account, but nevertheless delighted about the "growing up and gaining skills" part.) Those steps still seem pretty far away for us, but it's great to see a glimpse of what the future holds a few years down the road.

I gather that whenever I get to see your kids again, I will be helpless against their united blades. Should be fun. :-)

Beds are totally overrated. J has one, and he chooses to sleep on a blanket on the floor instead -- sometimes with a pillow, sometimes (if he's an engine that night) without, because of course, "Engines don't use pillows, Mommy!" (I have been very careful NOT to point out that engines also don't lie down.) I recently participated in a conversation about someone else's upcoming vacation in which she was obsessing about where the toddler would sleep, since the hotel wouldn't have cribs and she didn't want to have to check a pack-n-play; she continued to obsess about this after I pointed out that a folded blanket on the floor would work just fine and has worked, repeatedly, for each of our kids in turn, and seemed not to want to accept this advice. I decided explaining J's sleeping habits would either confuse or horrify her, and stopped talking. Blankets on the floor: Totally sufficient for anyone under the age of 10 -- and beyond, in some cases; camping was way more comfortable when I was a teenager than it is now, and all those tree roots and random ground bumps really didn't bother me nearly as much.

I love the swords. And yay, reading! Independent reading represents such a wonderful step up in the ability to self-entertain.

Crime Fighter will certainly outgrow his bed in a similar fashion, what with being the unnatural progeny of Sir Edmund Hillary. I say unnatural because I'm quite certain I've never actually met the deceased gentleman.

We moved the boys into a bunk bed when the monkey was one yo, and starting to climb the crib. We put pillows on the ground next to the lower bunk, so he could climb in and fall out without being hurt, and they loved it for the next several years.

There they go with that Growing Up thing. Without permission and while we're looking, even!

(Thing 1 slept on a futon on the floor for a couple years - now he's on a futon/frame a couple inches off the floor. Thing 2 would have none of it, wanting a Proper Bed for as long as he could express the idea.)

Hotspur is welcome to the futon mattress I have in the basement for the time being.
