Against Angst
Jan. 26th, 2012 02:49 pmI am a massive ball of nerves today, so I'm going to subject you all to the activity I find most soothing right now: writing about the children.
Hotspur is the magpie of fuzzy things. She found an old receiving blanket yesterday and clutched it to her heart, declared her love, and demanded that I use it to tuck her in. (Tucking in is a twitchy thing lately - if any blanket but the right one is in contact with her body, she will scream.) She is also in love with Olivia the pig. She sings happy birthday to everything - in the past twenty-four hours, we have celebrated me, her,
danceboy, Danger Lad! and yogurt.
This morning, Danger Lad! put one sock on both feet, and hopped into the hall to show me. He has two speeds: bouncing and sulking. I like bouncing better, although I note that it doesn't move a whole lot faster than sulking, as it's aggressively non-linear. He gives wonderful hugs. He has picked up the habit of complimenting me on my cooking, and I am reinforcing the heck out of that, because I like it, and because I like the notion of him being happily married someday. It occurs to me, however, that this behavior on my part may be the source of endless newlywed complaints about people who think their mother's cooking is the best ever.
