The snow got me an unexpectedly free day today, and it was a much better, much easier day than yesterday.

I started off promising myself a day to be lazy, and I'm not sure it happened. My lazy day somehow resulted in split pea soup, and there are uncooked bagels in the fridge, to be boiled and baked tomorrow (when the gravlax I've been curing should be ready to eat). Hotspur napped at all the convenient times - once in the morning, when I started the sponge for bagels, chopped vegetables and picked over the split peas; and once in the afternoon, when I needed to pay attention to the soup and shape and proof dough. In my corner of the multi-verse, stir crazy involves a lot of food.

Danger Lad! went to bed early (he didn't nap at daycare), and [personal profile] danceboy wasn't all that far behind him. At eight, I put Hotspur in my lap so I could surf with one hand and give her a bottle with the other, and fifteen minutes later she was snoozing like a baby angel.

I have disassembled the "Free to Good Home" box, and I do believe we'll be keeping Hotspur after all.

And I'm not staring raptly into her eyes the entire time I feed her. By the time she starts kindy, she should de-sparkle other children on contact.

tomorrow (when the gravlax I've been curing should be ready to eat)

Oh, delicious! I've never tried making my own gravlax (though I often mix up a variant on the traditional gravlax sauce to have with ordinary salmon), but it's been a favorite of mine for years. How tricky is the recipe?

I hope it's all every bit as good as it sounds!

It's not hard, it just takes time and fridge space. And it's the reason there's an eight pound dumbbell in my fridge.

eh?

What's the relationship of an 8 lb dumbbell to making gravlax?

It's weighting the fish down.

Days without ambition always seem to turn into the best days with a baby around. I'm glad you had a better day. (And what is/are gravlax? I discovered the wonder that is lox / smoked salmon on bagels with cream cheese only some months ago; this sounds like some variant on that?)

And wow, split pea soup sounds like a wonderful idea today. (High of 14, lots of errands. Yuck.)

Gravlax is cured salmon. I don't think it's as salty as straight-up lox, and it involves dill, but it appears fundamentally quite similar.
