In the NICU, they gave Miss Hotspur her first meal (10 ccs of colostrum) and she tolerated it so well and liked it so much that they plunged ahead and gave her a second helping a few hours later. She's on CPAP and mostly room air, but needs to be reminded to breathe now and again. We got to snuggle her for an hour this morning before she had to go back under the bili lights, but we hope that her jaundice will clear up quickly, now that she's eating. She had a heart murmur a few days ago but they can no longer hear it.

The nurses in the NICU say I can stop bringing breast milk in. They say they'll let me know when they need more. They suggest we consider buying a deep freeze.

I'm at home. I did some dishes and wiped the counters down. I snuggled with Danger Lad!, who sang to me, and played with duplos and his football, and sat on my lap and ate most of my dinner. I supervised the brushing of teeth, and got him into his pajamas (his grands got him some PJs with footballs on them, and he is enamored enough that he consents to wear them when he goes to sleep). Then I eavesdropped on the baby monitor while my guys sang more songs (Twinkle Little Star, the alphabet song, and Code Monkey). I snuggled with [personal profile] danceboy and watched the last little bit of Galaxy Quest.

This is not what Amanda Palmer has in mind when she sings that she took out the trash today and she's on fire, but that is kind of how I feel about it.

That scritchy-scratchy-swooshy sound you hear dimly in the background?

Celebratory soft-shoe, all for you.

Go Vivian. They'll be needing more breast milk before you know it. And yay for Danger Lad as well. He's just what you've been needing.

Is a biliblanket an option for the lights? That would (maybe) let you hold her while she was receiving the phototherapy.

Yay, eating! Yay, snuggles! Yay, no heart murmur! And yay, good evening with your guys! Glad to hear that life is improving.

I second the biliblanket suggestion. But it may soon not be an issue either way; colostrum and breastmilk are wonderful treatments for jaundice.

That's marvellous news. Nifty. And I like that name. Makes her sound like a classic movie star.

Hey, huge congrats on the little one. She looks beautiful. Glad to hear you're home and doing well, and hope it's not too long before she is too x x

So, had she not eaten anything until then? That just doesn't seem like a good plan. Or had they fed her something else?

Am I missing something major here?

i assume tube or IV feeding of some variety up until now. often preemies stomachs aren't up to doing the whole digesting thing quite yet...

Ok, yeah, that makes sense.

I'm just sitting here going "WHY weren't they FEEDING HER? Of COURSE she wasn't doing fantastically."

Yay! I'm glad you're home and on your feet and not too sore, and cheering for Ms. V.

A good day is a good day...

we bought a little freezer, then it got full, and we got a big chest freezer. Used it for a year or so, then sold it to a restaurant.

p.s. Use bags for the milk, not plastic bottles, bags are much cheaper and pack better in cold storage.

We are actually getting the bottles from the NICU - their choice of container, paid for by our insurance, I'm sure.

There is some evidence that antibodies in breast milk are more likely to stick to the plastic bags, and therefore not get to the baby. I preferred bottles for this reason for Danger Lad! and feel pretty strongly about it this time out as well.
