I haven't really been up to reading much lately, because I don't have much time and I don't have much brain, so I'm making no claims that my reading has been ambitious or intellectual, but those of you who haven't run into it already should check out Adam Warren's Empowered series. It has cute and sexy going for it (before handing it to your pre-teen children, you would have to steel yourself to do some pretty unpleasant explaining of one of the lurking bad guys), and it has taken an unsavory comic-book trope and turned into something sweet and brilliant. Without spoiling volume 4 for you, allow me just to say that the denouement is incredibly satisfying.

The book passes the Bechdel test, and while Warren gives poor Emp an unbelievably fragile and skintight set of superpowers and raging body image issues, he has also given her a reasonably realistic set of motivations (not revealed until, um, vol. 3), and a fantastic set of sidekicks (entertaining you from vol. 1 onwards!).

I want you to read them so that you understand what I'm talking about when I say that I want Ninjette to hook up with Maid Man, and that if you ask me, Captain Havoc and Protean have it coming.

I like my popcorn reading to have some quality, and this sounds like it may be worth the tasting.
