I met the cutest dog last night - a 14-week old mutt with some obvious retriever in his ancestry. He was just getting the hang of the whole "taking a human for walks" thing, and he was so excited to be out.

I want a dog. Only I don't want a dog all the time. I want a dog to go running with when the weather is nice. I think the ideal solution would be the ZipCar of pet ownership - ZipDog! - a dog I could rent by the hour whenever I wanted or needed one. I think lots of people could benefit from having a dog they could take out jogging, or play frisbee with on the beach, or use as bait when trolling the park to meet boys/girls.

Check out your local humane society. Our neighbor has just gotten "trained" so that he can go visit the dogs and take them for walks sometimes. They always need people to help "socialize" the animals- which generally means hang out with the poor puppies because they are lonely.

Also check out local working-dog training facilities. Sometimes they need people to bring the dogs out into society but not as a long-term thing. (They also sometimes need people to care for puppies up to a certain age, but it doesn't sound like you want a perpetual puppy.)

Fiona and I have had this idea. We swiftly expanded it into RentABaby, which would be the same thing, except with cute toddlers where somebody else would change the diapers.

I've spent the past four days walking a greyhound regularly. He's darling, but I don't want one of these permanently. I'd just like to import him from time to time--specifically, on really nice days--because he's fun to play outside with. But at midnight in freezing cold waiting for him to poop, he's less fun. I definitely agree with you on the ZipDog! concept. You should go into business!

LOL - that is GREAT!

And petting/playing with dogs is widely recognized as theraputic for stress and ailments... Could make a great expansion on the whole therapy dog idea.
