I tried, briefly, to come up with an explanation, and there's just nothing doing. There is no reason for roses to be the way they are, except for centuries of human efforts to breed them, and in order to bother with that, we had to get obsessed with them in the first place, so my guess is that they've always been sort of ludicrous. They can mysteriously die in the cushiest of circumstances, and persist in the worst. They just don't make any kind of sense.
