Danger Lad!'s grandma and I took him out today and bought him his very first pair of real shoes. He did not like being measured for them, but he got over it when he discovered that, with shoes and enthusiasm, his feet make stomping noises.
Here's what I have discovered about baby shoes: they make the baby faster. Robeez don't have much sole to them - they protect the foot, while leaving the wearer aware of the terrain and making him (please heaven) slightly cautious about it. Toddler-sized sneakers are tough little things, defending toddler feet (although not toddler knees) from rocks and asphalt and things that are otherwise potentially uncomfortable to stand or walk on.
Danger Lad! spent the rest of the afternoon with his grands, stomping around their house and the cul-de-sac outside it. He watched a neighbor rake mulch, and rolled balls around, and ran and ran and ran. He was returned to me cheerful, with slightly skinned knees.
Also, Danger Lad! had a very convincing go at dismantling the screen door last night. I think, if I hadn't checked on him, he'd have dismantled the big springy hinge.
Where can I bring my kid where I can just let him run around? I am so tired of running after him to yank him out of things. Is there someplace in the greater Boston metro area where I could let him loose to enjoy his new shoes for an hour or so, without having to worry about what he gets into?
