Strep

Ever since I quit having cancer, my medical hobby is strep. I get it 2-3 times a year. I usually have strep at the hobbyist level - I go into my doctor with a sore throat and basically nothing else, and she doesn't believe me particularly, but the rapid strep test comes back positive and I go home with antibiotics. This time, though, I started to get sick on a Sunday (in a city with no Minute Clinics), which turns out to have been a spectacular opportunity to really get out there, and develop a platonic case of strep.

It's amazing. I had never really appreciated the depth of possibilities before. The places I can get to with just a little commitment, and the unexplored potential still out there! Scarletina! Rheumatic fever!

Actually, I'm staring at my antibiotics, wondering if I can move this along by taking them ahead of schedule.

Far be it from me to discourage a hobbyist, but this one seems likely to be far less enjoyable than your others, even the most masochistic of them.

I used to play a lot in this strep sandbox, with more frequency than you, and to more depth. It never paid any dividends, and few if any of the skills gained there transferred anywhere else, nor even helped me win these games any better. I can't say I would recommend it to anyone...

After I finish with this round, I'm going to back to swearing at butter.

platonic.... strep....?

Does it give you side hugs and backrubs but refuses to get naked with you?

It is the most perfect and thorough example of it's kind imaginable. I mean, usually I have strep and it's not big, but this? This is the genuine article that Marianne Dashwood nearly died from.

So it's the "go big or go home" version! Except going home in this case probably really would have been the better option.

I had forgotten that was what almost got Marianne.

Eeeeesh. Maybe don't be such an over-achiever?

Planning to underachieve as thoroughly as possible in future.

*hugs* I get it about once every 3-4 years, and it is SO PAINFUL. I always seem to get it on a weekend and try to hold out for Monday, and half the time I fail. My doctor finally told me I can just page her and she'll call in a prescription on the weekend.

Our peds practice has a walkin policy on strep testing, and let adults walk in too, and it has become the thing I recommend any parent looking for peds to look for

I had scarlet fever twice when I was a kid. I really hope you don't get it, and I hope you recover quickly.

I used to have a strep hobby myself. Such a pain. The only thing worse was the time the kids got it. Swearing at butter and playing with yarn are both far preferable. I hope you're better soon.

Mine had always been bronchitis rather than strep. Not as much in recent years since I hit the eligibilty conditions for a priority-list flu shot every fall, but I'm okay about finding a new hobby. Hoping your current exploration of the Platonic Ideal is brief. Damn butter.
